Membership in The American Legion is open to all honorable service members and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.
The LEGION Act (Current Law)
Under the federal LEGION Act (Let Everyone Get Involved In Opportunities for National Service Act), the eligibility criteria were expanded to honor all who served during periods of armed conflict. You are eligible if you have served at least one day of active military duty since December 7, 1941 to the present, and were either honorably discharged or continue to serve honorably.
Eligible Branches: U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, Space Force, and Merchant Marine (eligible service December 7, 1941 to August 15, 1945).
How to Apply, Renew, or Transfer
- Proof of Service: Locate a copy of your DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) showing an Honorable Discharge. Active duty personnel may present current military orders or valid active-duty credentials.
- Complete the Application: Fill out the official American Legion membership form (available at the post canteen or online via Legion.org).
- Post Transfers: If you are already a Legionnaire belonging to another post or the Department holding post (Post 208/400), bring your current membership card and fill out a 3-part Member Data Form (MDF) at Post 90 to execute your immediate transfer.
- Submit Dues: Bring your application, copy of your DD-214, and annual dues directly to the Post 90 canteen or mail them to our post address.
